the usual

A menu arrived in the mail from the Hibachi & Sushi. Just opened near the China Wok. Pricy. Poor location. What can they be thinking? If Quizno's couldn't make it there, what do they expect? I give them six months.

Antonio called. Chaos in North Bogota at Calle 74 and Avenida Caracas. Car bomb explodes killing three and injuring 32. Just two blocks from where Lina Margarita attends classes.  She is with three friends and by chance takes an alternate street. Saves her life?

Seared chicken with salad for lunch.

The clouds finally broke.

Rock Creek Park. Western end, circling back through Lone Oak Cemetery. Fairly new grave. William E. Mealer, born 1959. Picture of a truck on the stone. Is it the same William Mealer who used to drive for us at Belfast Rock?

David Copperfield. Chapter 45, a little heavy on the saccharin.

Usual supper of turkey breast cold cuts with mustard on rye, Walmart Deli potato salad and some fruit.

zestless

Check from Cosmolab. A beam of light in an otherwise dark and dreary morning.

Accompanied Mary to First Federal and First National to make deposits. Another onset of drizzle kept us from a lap in the park. To delay our return to domestic gloom, we stopped at the La Superior for papaya and at the car wash for a hosing down. The Durango.

Tilapia for lunch. Marinated in my zesty Italian dressing, then pan-seared. Patacones, butter beans and avocado to round out the plate. Apple and pear appetizers.

Juan Carlos just called from France. His father Vicente, Mary's brother. is in intensive care in Bogota's Corpas Clinic. His heart. Vicente is my age. Makes one think.

Sigh.

Mothers Day

Partied with Charles Bronson last night. One Step Beyond, episode "The Last Round" (1961) streamed off YouTube.

We met Mother, Deborah and David at the Huddle House about 9:00 am this morning. Since we celebrate "Mother's" day at our house every Friday, it's hard to think up something different for her on the national holiday. I treated breakfast.

Mary and I shared the Smokehouse Platter: three eggs over medium, bacon, country sausage, hash browns, wheat toast (dry) and grits. All was done to perfection. Mother and Deborah shared another such platter. David had his usual Western omelet.

Afterwards, I took photos of the mothers and presented my mother with a card and box of assorted chocolates. I suspect the C653 would have done a better job.

After returning from mass, Mary was heating up the plate from last night, when Rafa called. He was bringing the rents. So, Mary had to quickly scrounge up some meat, etc. to go with what we had.

Rafa didn't leave until about 3:00 pm. Mary and I finally settled in to watch The 400 Blows (1959) from Netflix. French, with English subtitles. An exposé of poor parenting and custodial care in Paris.

We had a brief power outage with fifteen minutes left of the movie. Went out onto the porch to wait it out. I snapped the first Dusty Millers (Jacobaea maritima?) that have started to flower. Soon, we returned to finish the flick and take supper.

On and off precipitation since yesterday evening. We should see some happy plants tomorrow.

Quinceanera

Partied with more episodes of The Veil streamed off YouTube last night.

Drumsticks for lunch today. I had mine with a gordita from Q's Casa. Mary had hers with a tamale. Guava and pear on the side.

The lighting was good for a shot of a flower combination, a popurrí as Mary calls it, of yellow daylily and marigolds.

Mary went to a 2:00 pm mass for Moro's daughter, Joanna, who just turned fifteen. In spite of the overcast sky, I spent a good while outside reading David Copperfield.

Shortly after the mass ended, Mary attended  the party for Joanna at the armory. Brought back what will probably be tomorrow's lunch.

I've been morbidly bitter lately. Need to stop watching CNN.

befuddled

Had a rocky sleep last night.

I was waiting on the patio this morning when our company arrived.

For lunch, we had a shrimp pasta vegetable mix with steamed okra and seared potato. Cantaloupe appetizer.

I couldn't remember having ever seen Mother so befuddled and absent-minded as today. She had to be prompted at every move, often more than once. But, here's the funny part. She beat us at rummy going away. Yes, I did forgive a couple of her blunders. But, still...wow!

After our company left, I continued to enjoy the fine weather. Noticed the portulacas coming along nicely.

At the outpost, waiting for sundown, I read more David Copperfield. Chapter 33 is a beautiful homage to young love. An absolute masterpiece.
